Two Cents and a Foot Long was Official Selection of the 2024 Austin Film Festival Official that was written and directed by Kanin Guntzelman. It’s about a “Sub Club” worker (played by Saul Trujillo) who makes sandwiches and has a customer (played by George Russon) that starts to vent about his life. The customer is pretty nice even though he’s talking about feeling unfulfilled, having insomnia and what have you. The story is told almost entirely through dialogue. It achieves an incredible balance between dark comedy and sincerity, as it has a beating heart despite the often times morbid or shocking humor. I couldn’t help but think of Ernest Hemmingway’s A Clean and Well-Lighted Place while watching this, I mean, they’re both centered around a conversation in a place where you eat, both are almost entirely dialogue driven and both cover similar topics and themes. In my opinion, the script is just incredible, with the acting and directing lifting and giving life to this short.
