The Nectar Instead was one of the Official Selections from the Portland Festival of Cinema, Animation & Technology’s 2024 festival that accepted the Filmmaker Mixer Podcast’s offer to review their work. It is a stop motion animated short film about a talking fly who gets stuck on a fly trap and has an existential realization about its life. It’s really funny and goes in some very unexpected directions. The animation is really well done, not to mention incredibly charming. I love the variety of materials used for each prop; it gives the film a very homey feeling when you look at it. The characters are also all really quite adorable. The script is great, and takes a simple premise in a really interesting and funny direction. I also think the voice actors did a great job bringing the humor of the script to life. If you want to laugh, I would recommend giving The Nectar Instead a watch.
