Le Grand Party was one of the Official Selections from the Portland Festival of Cinema, Animation and Technology’s 2024 festival that accepted the Filmmaker Mixer Podcast’s offer to review their work. It is an animation created on a pinscreen about strange creatures on the moon coming out after humanity has left it and having a party. Pinscreens, to those unaware, involve a screen filled with these small pins, which can be moved in or out by pressing an object onto the screen. The screen is lit from the side so that the pins cast shadows, which is how the effect that this style of animation is known for is achieved. This animation was very impressive on a technical level, but I also really enjoyed it as a viewing experience. The designs of the creatures are charming, and the transitions between certain scenes are incredibly impressive, not to mention kind of trippy. It’s awesome.
