Silent Notes is an Official Selection of the 2024 Austin Film Festival. The feature length drama is written by Jason Furlani and directed by Toni Comas.
Silent Notes stars Daniel Durant as Bruce, whose hearing was impaired by a childhood illness. Bruce decides to get surgery in order to regain his hearing. However, the surgery is expensive, and Bruce is forced to accept an errand job he believes will be quite lucrative. The film focuses on Bruce’s friendship with an overly talkative man, expertly played by Matt Riker. As an aside, Matt and Director Toni Comas, were recent guests on Filmmaker Mixer.
The two main plot points of Silent Notes converge in a wonderfully surprising way. I found Silent Notes to be incredibly charming and sweet, and throughout its run I couldn’t help but have a pleasant feeling wash over me. I really enjoyed the editing, particularly how muting certain audio moments allows us to feel the protagonist’s experience of impaired hearing.
The emotional scenes are skillfully done, and they do a tremendous job making you root for the main character. The script was endearing, and it felt a bit like a book I’d see on the bestsellers list. The directing really brought me into the story. It’s a powerful film on both an emotional and technical level. I truly enjoyed this film.
Silent Notes screened on October 25, 2024 and will screen again on October 28th at Galaxy at 7:00 PM. Silent Notes is a fresh take on a gangster movie and we hope you have a chance to watch it!
