“Sitzprobe” is the 8th episode of the third season of the live action series Only Murders in the Building. Shelly Westerman, ACE, Editor and Payton Koch, Editor, have been nominated for an Emmy in Outstanding Picture Editing for a Single-Camera Comedy Series. Watching the episode, I was quickly impressed by how the transitions between shots were smooth, and the way they were spliced together often heightened the emotions conveyed through the story. Then I got to one particular scene and it hit me. “This is probably why the episode was nominated,” I thought.

Steve Martin’s character has a musical number, and during it, the screen splits like a comic book – several different panels next to each other, showing footage of what’s going on in a different subplot of the show. All of them are moving around to catch your attention and it’s so well organized and well thought out that it’s quite easy to follow. When we next returned to one of the subplots, I found that the musical number had perfectly progressed each storyline. The episode itself was really clever and well-written, and always had me interested in what would happen next, sometimes taking me by surprise.
