Mermaid, Bitch was an Official Selection of the 2024 Austin Film Festival. Directed by Victoria Negri and co written by Negri and Alexi Pappas. Mermaid, Bitch is a short, live-action comedy about a young woman who wakes up with a mermaid’s tail. Out of necessity, her best friend starts to help her move around given the difficulty of navigating the world with a fish tail instead of actual legs. The script is charming, I liked the naturalistic dialogue. There was something almost vaguely allegorical about the story, and the discussions about empathy between the two characters. This balanced out the short’s humor with genuine and sincere friendship of the two protagonists. The tone is very light and endearing, and it takes its silly premise in a charming direction. I also have to say I really liked the vibrancy of this film’s visual. The colors captured by the filmmakers really pop out and this small detail about the film that really helped make it stand out.
