Luki and the Lights was one of the Official Selections from the Portland Festival of Cinema, Animation & Technology’s 2024 festival that accepted the Filmmaker Mixer Podcast offer to review their work.  Luki and the Lights is a really charming and heartwarming animated short.  Luke and the Lights starts off lightheartedly.  Luki, the title character, shown as a jovial, energetic robot who is living his best life, but the story takes a sad turn. The film uses light bulbs as a really creative way to explain what is happening to him. Luki and the Lights is beautifully animated. I love how expressive all of the characters are, and how you can glean a bit about all of their personalities just by how they move or look, all without any dialogue. The music choices are great, too. I appreciated what I was taught by Luki and the Lights. Admittedly, I was not expecting it to be about ALS. I am named after my mother’s highschool friend who is currently battling ALS. This made the film especially poignant and important for me to watch.
