Crustacean Counseling was one of the Official Selections from the Portland Festival of Cinema, Animation and Technology’s 2024 festival that accepted the Filmmaker Mixer Podcast’s offer to review their work. It is a 2D animated short film about a starfish talking to his counselor, a clam, about his life’s problems. The art style is incredibly charming, and the dialogue has an ad libbed feeling to it. It’s very cute. I really enjoyed the visuals used to go along with the starfish’s story. His story was one that I found to be quite interesting, even beneath all the puns and silliness. I found myself surprisingly invested in it. This is really impressive because this short film is barely over a minute in length.
