You Play Too Much is a candid animated short film based on the childhood of its Anny and Emmy Award winning writer and director Rob Shaw. What I found remarkable about this short is its beautiful balance of humor and sadness. While the film is presented largely as light hearted, especially through its charming stop motion visuals, there is also a lot of sadness to follow it. This makes it a very immersive experience in my opinion. The detailed and expressive narration, the stylized animation; everything comes together to bring you there. I especially love the realism present in the script. Rob Shaw doesn’t portray childhood as this pure and innocent thing. The kids say bad words, and a whole part of their culture is rough housing. This, paired with the wonderfully stylized animation, makes the film very easy to connect with. It’s built off of a highly palpable memory that shows everything, both good and bad. It’s just a very honest film that shows things as they were. If any of this sounds up your alley, You Play Too Much will not disappoint!
