The Human Fossil was one of the Official Selections from the Portland Festival of Cinema, Animation & Technology’s 2024 festival that accepted the Filmmaker Mixer Podcast offer to review their work. It is a 2D animated short film about what appears to be a strange alien creature wandering a barren wasteland on Earth, and observing forgotten objects. The animation is beautiful, and places 2D characters and objects in 3D environments. The 2D assets are drawn in a really wonderful style that reminds me a lot of Studio Ghibli. I love the direction the story takes, and felt that the incredible visual language of this short really furthered the emotions it evoked. It’s moving and while the story is sad there is a strange sense of hope, beauty and wonder to be found in it, as it presents these small objects as being incredibly meaningful.
