“Back to School” an episode of the 2D animated web series Om Nom Stories was one of the Official Selections from the Portland Festival of Cinema, Animation & Technology’s 2024 festival that accepted the Filmmaker Mixer Podcast offer to review their work. I was shocked to see a familiar face; I actually grew up when Cut the Rope, the game the character Om Nom came from, first debuted and lived near a friend who really enjoyed it. I’ll admit, I didn’t know that there was an animated series made about him. This episode follows Om Nom as he tries his hand at being a student, only to be really bad at it. Comedy ensues. It’s silly and charming, with a lot of great visual gags and an adorable animation style. I really enjoyed how they paid off some of the gags that were established earlier; it was quite brilliant. I’m glad that I got to watch this and revisit an almost forgotten part of my childhood.
