Vines was one of the Official Selections from the Portland Festival of Cinema, Animation & Technology’s 2024 festival that accepted the Filmmaker Mixer Podcast offer to review their work. It is a live action short film about a mad botanist who has interesting plans for the plants he is raising. It’s an intense story that unfolds in some very unexpected directions, with the use of some really impressive and unique practical effects. I really like one particular effect, which appeared to involve the use of Stop Motion animation in tandem with live action, bringing to mind Jason and the Argonauts. The actor who played the botanist did a phenomenal job with his character, delivering each line with believability and elegance.
