Perfect City: The Mushroom is a surrealist stop motion animated film that brings viewers inside of an artist’s nightmare as she grieves over her brother’s death. The focus is less on tangible events, and more on abstract representations of emotion through imagery, sound and words, and brilliantly replicates the feeling of being inside of a nightmare, as it dumps traces of various memories, many of which twist familiar items into unfamiliar forms, and at many points, makes the viewer feel trapped. This form of surrealism and use of black and white both called to mind Eraserhead for me quite a lot.
