Oh Whale is a short form documentary centered around news reporter Paul Linnman, famous for his report on an exploding whale, something I actually was familiar with prior to watching, which made my viewing experience unique. I saw footage I recognized from a Youtube upload of the news report this documentary was about, and was like “wow, I never thought about how this was someone who had so much of a life.” It really made me think about how every little video I find is like that, how so much leads up to a defining moment like that, and that seems to be exactly what this documentary sets out to do. On top of that, the presentation of this thing is just amazing, using a mix of current day interview footage, old footage, as well as these very uniquely animated moments for the parts they didn’t have footage for. There’s also a lot to be said about a writer’s career journey in this one, which could make it rather inspiring for some people, so I would definitely recommend this one to aspiring writers.
