Mother of Portland, by Kyle Montagne, is a sharp, kinetic short documentary about Lisa Schroeder and her Portland-based restaurant called, Mother’s Bistro and Bar. For some of the short, Lisa is seated in a pale yellow, leather arm chair. This is where she finishes her comparison of a well-run restaurant shift to an orchestra making beautiful music.

Using drone footage, news clips and personals stills, Montagne tells Lisa’s personal story and professional success with skill and economy. His steady cam deftly follows the busy restaurant staff his use of quick-cut edits give a real sense of the pace of working in such a bistro. Overall, this short highlights many of Lisa’s accomplishments- she truly is the Mother of Portland. Bravo to all her good work and recognition by the greater community.

Mother of Portland may be a short documentary but it is definitely big on showcasing Kyle Montagne talents as a filmmaker.
