Written and directed by Simon King, She Came From Outer Space opens with a title card and an atmosphere reminiscent of classic sci-fi films. From the start, it promises that old-school science fiction magic, and I was pleasantly surprised by the unexpected twists and reveals throughout the short. Our lead character, Angela, played by Signe Naranjo, is socializing with friends when an unexpected encounter in the woods changes her life. Without giving more away, I’ll just say that there’s a moment that feels like a loving homage to the iconic creature feature hand—and if I’m correct -it sure is a clever callback.

The special effects in this film are both imaginative and clever—plainly put, they’re just cool. It’s evident that a lot of care went into the visuals, and the result is something that keeps you engaged throughout.

This short sets up a world that you’d want to see more of but I’m not sure if there’s a full feature in the works. Nevertheless, this short is a self-contained, enjoyable experience that showcases the filmmaker’s storytelling skills and the excellent collaboration behind the scenes.

She Came From Outer Space blends classic sci-fi charm with unexpected twists and sometimes entertainingly-nauseating special effects, delivering a captivating short that leaves you wanting more.
