The music video for New Body Electric’s single, RUNNING OUT ON A FEELING, reminds me of the many selections curated by MTV’s video jockeys. Fergus Firth (Director/Editor/PostProd) and Ellena Rosenthal (Producer/Set Design/AD) vision for this catchy pop tune-allowed me to time jump to my teenage years. Instantly, I was transported back to a period when mixed media artists were given the additional canvas of a music video to express their artistic vision. That being said today’s generation has the good fortune to experience a music video that harkens back to a bygone era. *Link below.

To test this theory, I had my daughters (21 and 19) watch the video and tell me their impression of it. I spotted them both bopping along to the music. It was endearing. As per usual, their shrewd commentary did not disappoint and I learned something new about them.

My eldest said, “I kind of thought of David Lynch but more whimsical instead of dreary and meant be abstract and not taking the images literally but more the emotions it gives off.” She continued, “I think the hologram represents an escapism or being a part of something bigger. Like when they are in doors, seeing the tv, technology- but then they go outdoors and also have hobbies show them taking action.” The younger one said, “I like the editing and the aesthetic. It felt retro and cool.”

My younger daughter teased me for asking for their input, figuring I was going go use their words in my review. After all, I was fervently typing while they shared their thoughts. I shared, “Yes, I’m planning to quote you!”

Up to this point in their upbringing I had not realized that my children even watched music videos. It’s not like we stream MTV. But I learned this new thing about them when they told me they prefer this style of video to those that are concert-like, or dance routines or even straight forward narratives that tell the song’s story. While those style of video have their place and value, I did not expect our generation gap to make room for us to share admiration for this particular video. The fact is, we all love the song and felt that this type of video brilliantly represents the music expression. In summary, this technically complex compilation of interesting visuals represent a feeling, a vibe, an intention, which is no easy task but the team behind the music video make it look easy.

Running Out on a Feeling is the immersive experience that Rosenthal had envisioned! NEW BODY ELECTRIC’S music video to their single, Running Out on a Feeling, brings life to its poetic lyrics.
