FOOD FOR THOUGHT is a thought-provoking documentary film crafted by writer-directors Giles Anderson and Dan Richardson. This dynamic duo were past guests to the Filmmaker Mixer Podcast and if you have not already listened to their episode it can be found here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/filmmaker-mixer/id1663638176?i=1000694516817
The introduction of these two filmmakers truly showcases their sense of humor and comfort with one another. In their own quirky way, Dan and Giles explain their interest to provide a unique film experience by producing a cinematic documentary that explores the global vegan phenomena. They drew inspiration from the growing vegan movement and wanted to document participants taking their 30-day vegan challenge. However, the documentary became so much more than that.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT features influential voices in the vegan movement and advocates for compassionate animal care. At one point, the filmmakers express their desire to incorporate rescuing an animal into their journey. Watch the film to see if they make it happen.
As part of the documentary, the filmmakers explore a massive vegan festival in Croatia, offering a fascinating glimpse into the vibrant plant-based community. Then they visit the plant-based company of BEYOND MEAT in California. Through their journey, the filmmakers uncover fascinating facts about the benefits of plant-based protein over animal sources. The film delivers eye-opening insights, highlighting the significant resources devoted to meat production.
Footage of the 30-day Vegan Challenge participants is interspersed throughout the film. We meet them, learn how they food prep and discover how they navigate the social aspect of being vegan (like going to a dinner that is not plating vegan food). The challenge culminates in a heartfelt gathering at a farm, where participants connect with animals—an incredibly rewarding and moving experience to witness.
Throughout FOOD FOR THOUGHT the choice of music is truly wonderful really helping propel the story forward. The production value is top notch – as mentioned the team visits many locations and we get beautiful views with drones and wonderful cinematic moments.
Speaking of which, there is an awesome moment where the team contemplates how they will make the documentary cinematic. The result is delightful and laugh out loud funny. In summary, I really enjoyed FOOD FOR THOUGHT and invite you to stream it for yourself. FOOD FOR THOUGHT is available on youtube for free and also available ad-free for a small fee.
