Skye Hoshi: Anime Girl is a feature length live action film about an anime girl who mysteriously appears in the real world. The writing was charming and had a great balance of heartfelt and humorous moments. There were some really creative choices made with the camera work, such as a ramen making scene that used hard cuts in a style that reminded me somewhat of Edgar Wright.
The characters were likable, distinct and interesting, particularly the titular Skye Hoshi, who was written and performed with a contagious zest for life. It’s a very feel-good movie that really makes the most of its premise. I felt like quite the adventure, which makes it hard to believe it was set in only a few locations!
I was always very invested in seeing where the story would go next as I watched, and the story took some interesting and unexpected directions. I really enjoyed where it went and how it explored its characters and ideas. It had some surprisingly sad moments amongst all the humor. I loved how positive the film and story was and found it to be a delightful cinematic experience. Though the story has its sad or emotional moments, it spends more time focusing on the beautiful aspect of it all than it does on just being sad about it. It was an all around really delightful film, and I felt very happy watching it from start to finish.
