The Burial of Natty Bumppo was one of the Official Selections from the Portland Festival of Cinema, Animation and Technology’s 2024 festival that accepted the Filmmaker Mixer Podcast’s offer to review their work. It is an abstract 2D animated short film, featuring a variety of elements that appear to hold some sort of symbolic weight, including a comet, out of which comes a train, a graveyard, and people holding suitcases that are filled with colorful butterflies. It’s like a dream in a lot of ways and can be enjoyed regardless of whether or not you search for meaning within it. The animation is gorgeous and nothing short of impressive. The colors are beautiful, and every frame looks like a painting. I love that this film is one that could only really exist if it were animated; it takes advantage of its own medium really well.  I’m not used to this type of film, but I greatly enjoyed it and plan to seek out more animations like it.
